Integration into diversity theory renewing – once again – assimilation theory

Richard Alba has been at the forefront of renewing classical assimilation theory based on empirical data post-1960s migrants in US. He focused migrant groups into dominant non-Hispanic white majority group. This article − once again rethinks theory. I argue that new demographic reality majority–minority cities Europe and North America necessitates a research direction, entailing development novel theoretical framework partially tools. Not only relative size group decreased, but shifting positions power are also challenging us to rethink frameworks. propose look present-day processes integration more as multi-directional. Everyone (including former group) integrates ethnically racially diverse urban context. outline contours framework: Integration Diversity (ID) Theory. focuses how members integrate city Based their diversity attitudes practices, analyse ID relate socio-economic outcomes, quality inter-ethnic relations feelings belonging safety.
